6 Things To Consider Before A Kitchen Remodeling

When was the last time you remodeled your kitchen? Probably a while ago, if not never. Kitchen remodeling can not be taken lightly – you’re spending time in this space, chatting to people while stirring a pot, and starring while your coffee is brewing… As an essential part of your house, the kitchen should reflect your needs and personal taste. When diving into it, you would discover there is so much more than choosing cabinets or backsplash colors when it comes to kitchen renovation.

What’s the best way to utilize the kitchen space?

Kitchen space is valuable. To fully enjoy your new kitchen you want to optimize the kitchen is structured and organized. It does not necessarily mean more storage space – it’s about planning the kitchen that will serve you and your family best. Each household is different, as some families spend tons of time in the kitchen, while others are not using it as often, so you better communicate your preferences with the kitchen designer. Keep an open mind regarding the layout, and remember this is the best time to make such changes. You might be surprised how a few changes can make a difference. For example, although we got used to the idea that every kitchen must have top cabinets, maybe big windows would be the best choice.

How much storage space do I need?

We all like storage, don’t we? Especially if it means this space can be stuffed with everything we don’t want on our precious clean-looking counter space. Not to mention the need for a pantry. Planning a new kitchen is an opportunity to personalize the space, in a way that fits you. Make a list of all the small appliances, like the coffee maker and air fryer, so you can allocate a built-in space. Some cabinets can be strategically placed, and stretch up to the ceilings if needed. Squeeze that space!

What are the must-haves in my kitchen?

For some, the must-haves are a wide countertop that would make it easy to roll out dough for cookies, for others it is a countertop that allows for enough work area for more than one person. In that case, a multifunctional island might be the best solution.

Your must-haves depend on the way you are using your kitchen. Some elements you can consider include in your list are a pro-style range stove, under cabinets lighting, pull-out cutting board, a trash drawer, or a hidden pantry that looks like another cabinet. The possibilities are endless. Ask the kitchen designer you are working with for guidelines. A professional kitchen designer would ask you those questions at the begging of the process, to make sure the design plans for your kitchen habits, and vision.

Modern, classic, or contemporary – Which style do I like?

It is your opportunity to choose everything – just the way you like it. From light fixtures to tiles and appliances. First, define the style you are aiming for. An eclectic style, inspired by various other styles, is also a good choice. The safe and reliable option, especially if you consider selling the house in the future, would be a classic design – elegant and timeless. Such a design style will include glass cupboard doors, dark wood, and a contemporary-looking marble. In a modern style kitchen, you would go with high-end finish materials, clean lines, and a combination of bright colors, and a limited color scheme. Maybe you like to take a look at some Scandinavian-inspired kitchens, shabby chic, or industrial – describe the general feel to your designer, who will be able to better guide you. Remember that each style is characterized by different elements, but the combination of the ones you like is what differentiates your kitchen from just any other kitchen.

God is in the details, or: from recessed lights to venting fans

Proper kitchen remodeling planning should include everything – not only the big stuff like the cabinets look but also the internal division; it should take into account the lighting above surfaces and the place where you would put dishes after washing it. Consider installing pull-out “pantry drawers,” and don’t forget cutting board and cookie trays slots. Those things make a huge difference in the kitchen “traffic flow.”

Expect the unexpected

You might not know what to expect, but you can be certain that something will. It can be a retainer wall you were not aware of its existence or a piping issue that could get discovered once you open the wall. Whatever it may be, it’s all solvable but it would require the budget. Prepare by allocating some of the budget you were initially planning to invest in your kitchen remodeling to unplanned changes or additions.
